National Theatre: "Life thru a lens"

Another older piece from around the time of Summerfolk. This is a verbatim interview transcript concerning the differences between theatre and TV, roles for women, and advice for aspiring actors.

DF Do you have a preference for acting for television or theatre?
JE I think I’m beginning to have one for theatre, I’ve done a lot this year. I’ve really been finding it a satisfying way to act at this particular time in my life.
DF Would you have been ready for it five years ago?
JE No.
DF Why’s that?
JE There’s a responsibility in theatre to keep working and to improve through the run of a show, and you don’t really have that in film and television. I think five years ago it was probably a bit of a relief (LAUGHS).
I don’t think I had the confidence to assume that I would improve. That’s what I’ve been finding so exciting this year, the chance to hone something and explore it every night.
DF Is there a big difference between acting for the two?
JE There are differences, but I think a lot of it depends on the space you’re playing in as an actor and the genre of film and television that you’re doing. I’ve never done a sit-com, but they’re usually quite a bit broader than your introspective French film. So it depends.
DF Which would you like to do more of in the future?
JE Theatre I think. [more]
